The Intent,Implementation and Imapct of our Currriculum
Intent
At Holme Upon Spalding Moor Primary School we shape our geography curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills. It is our intention that geography will inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and the people in it. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; formation and use of landscapes. We also want children to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways. We want children to enjoy and love learning about geography by gaining knowledge, understanding and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.
Implementation
In order to achieve our aims, we will:
- Deliver a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning shows progression across the geography curriculum. We teach on a two-year rolling plan.
- Provide children with practical, hands on learning experiences.
- Use a range of resources to enhance the teaching of geography in order to expand the children’s geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
- Study, in depth, a wide variety of locations, making comparisons between them.
- Introduce geographical vocabulary in a progressive way.
- Ensure that geography has the same importance given to it as other core subjects.
- Provide children with fieldwork experiences across all the key stages.
Impact
- Children have a passion for geography and are excited to ask questions and discover more for themselves.
- Children engage in geographical discussions, therefore fostering critical thinking skills and the ability to discuss a point of view.
- Children are equipped with the geographical skills and knowledge so they are ready for the next stage of their learning and for life as an adult in the wider world.
