The Intent, implementation and Impact of our Curriculum -History
Intent
We shape our history curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our intents are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for History; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of historical concepts, knowledge and skills; and for the children to study life in the past. We aim for a high-quality history curriculum which should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about the history of Britain and how it has influenced and been influenced by the wider world; know and understand about significant aspects of the history of the wider world like ancient civilisations and empires; changes in living memory and beyond living memory; learn about the lives of significant people of the past; understand the methods of historical enquiry and be able to ask and answer questions. We want children to enjoy and love learning about history by gaining this knowledge, understanding and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.

Implementation
In order to achieve our aims, we will:
- Deliver a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning shows progression across the history curriculum. We teach on a two-year rolling plan.
- Ensure enquiry-based learning is a key focus of the curriculum and children are encouraged to develop and test their own hypotheses.
- Make sure children understand primary and secondary sources.
- Ensure that history has the same importance given to it as the core subjects.
- Endeavour to make links with other subject areas, making the most of opportunities for cross curricular learning. This includes links with literacy where children read historical novels, greatly enhancing their knowledge of each period.
- Support learning through the use of school trips and visiting specialists in school including visits to historical sights to get ‘hands on history’ as well as using our school replica objects for contextual experiences in topics such as the Egyptians and the Victorians.
Impact
- Children have a passion for history and are excited to ask questions and discover more for themselves.
- Children are inquisitive about periods of history they are studying and can make connections between them.
- Children have a thorough knowledge of history in the context of the local area and beyond.
- Children understand the importance of primary and secondary sources of information and are able to distinguish between them.
- Children will be ready for the next stage of their learning and for life as an adult in the wider world.
