The Intent, implementation and Impact of our Curriculum – of Religious Education
INTENT
At Holme upon Spalding Moor, the aim of Religious Education is to ensure that all pupils develop an increased understanding of the diverse world in which they live in, and the impact this diversity can have on individuals and society. Learning about different religions and beliefs, through the three lenses of Theology, Philosophy and Social Sciences, we will encourage the children to ask questions about the concepts and nature of God, about the influence of religions and beliefs on individuals, cultures and communities, and to question the morals and ethics and what it means to be human.
Religious Education is taught to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school. It plays an important role with many other curriculum areas, particularly PSHE, in promoting the understanding of Modern British Values and the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of the children of HOSM.
IMPLEMENTATION
The RE will be taught through the East Riding 2022 Agreed Syllabus for Religion and Worldviews.
- Foundation –Children in will be taught according to the statutory requirements of the EYFS Handbook. Elements of religious education which can contribute to the areas outlined in the Early Learning Goals and in the Development Matters for 3-4 years and sets a foundation for learning in RE in Reception classes.
- Key stage 1- RE will be taught through Christianity and Islam, with Hinduism as an additional religion.
- Key stage 2 – RE will be taught through Christianity, Islam and Buddhism with other religions or non-religious worldviews.
- The lessons will be delivered across a two-year rolling plan, and will ensure that progression will be met, building on previous lessons.
- Lessons are planned in an ordered way including both the systematic learning of specific faiths and world beliefs and thematic learning exploring some of the ‘Big Questions’ in life.
- We will use a variety of teaching methods including art, music, discussion, the development of thinking skills, drama, the use of artefacts, pictures, stories, and the use of reflection.
- Visits to religious sites and visitors from a variety of faiths will be included in the implementation.
IMPACT
- Children have a secure understanding and knowledge of the religions studied and are confident to ask and answer significant and reflective questions about religion.
- Children demonstrate a good understanding of issues relating to the nature, truth and value of religion.
- Children show respect, tolerance and understanding of all religions and beliefs enabling them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in the modern world.
- Children have a strong understanding of how the beliefs, values, practices and ways of life within any religion come together.
